PNEUMA 2.2 (2024)
Upgraded version

The advanced version of Pneuma is an operable sound installation consisting of various animal horns, compressed air and control technology, designed for automated, programmed sequences and/or manual sound performances. Horns fitted with specially constructed mouthpieces are integrated into an installation made of metal sanitary pipes, which are supplied with compressed air by means of compressors, an air reservoir and pneumatic lines. The manual valves and mouthpieces allow the air flow to be controlled so that the horns produce a diverse range of sounds. A programmed control unit can open and close the electronic valves according to a set sequence, thus allowing for compositional design. The manual and digital-electronic modes can be executed separately or both can come together in a corresponding manner.
In Pneuma a playable sound installation featuring a compressor, air pressure technology and animal horns, pressure, air volume and vibration cause them to sound in a variety of ways: sound and lament become loud, and with them the dominance of humans over nature through technology. The horns used in the work are representative of those blown in religious rituals to signal festive occasions.
The title Pneuma (Greek πνεῦμα, English “wind, breath, spirit”) draws on the ancient concept of a universal principle permeating everything, via the Christian interpretation as the work of the Holy Spirit, to the technological and industrial use of compressed air by pneumatic devices to perform work. In this way, I trace a cultural history of the domination of nature, which derives a terminology from a natural phenomenology to become a defining principle and gives rise to techniques for dominating nature. In the performative operation of the installation, however, the performer itself appears to be trapped within it. Pneuma echoes the creature's sense of compulsion. It is about expression and pressure balance, about articulation and self-location in a technologised world.
