PNEUMA 2.2 (2024)
Upgraded version

The advanced version of Pneuma is an operable sound installation consisting of various animal horns, compressed air and control technology, designed for automated, programmed sequences and/or manual sound performances. Horns fitted with specially constructed mouthpieces are integrated into an installation made of metal sanitary pipes, which are supplied with compressed air by means of compressors, an air reservoir and pneumatic lines. The manual valves and mouthpieces allow the air flow to be controlled so that the horns produce a diverse range of sounds. A programmed control unit can open and close the electronic valves according to a set sequence, thus allowing for compositional design. The manual and digital-electronic modes can be executed separately or both can come together in a corresponding manner.
In ancient Greek, pneuma (πνεῦμα) means breath or wind and is used in a theological or philosophical context to refer to spirit. The horns used in the work represent those blown in religious rituals to signal festive occasions. As a pneumatic device, the compressor uses compressed air to perform mechanical work. In both cases, it is compressed air that is concentrated and forced to produce a specific result – be it religious-cultural or industrial. Pneuma sounds the compulsion of the creature. It is about expression and pressure equalisation, about articulation, and about self-location in a technologised world.
